How can I feel more confident on camera?

Feeling a little awkward on camera is completely normal, especially at first. These tips will help you look and feel your best, so you can focus on connecting with your audience.

Remember: These tips are about being authentic, not perfect. We’re all human. If your hair isn’t exactly how you want it or you forgot lipstick, your recipient won’t care, and they probably won’t even notice.

Step 1: Look your best to feel your best

Do something that makes you feel physically confident, such as:

  • Wearing a favorite outfit or accessory
  • Brushing your hair or adding a little makeup

Ask yourself: How would I want to look if I were speaking to this person face to face?

Step 2: Check your background

  • Check your background before you record. Your recipient will see it, so make sure you’re happy with what’s behind you.
  • Aim for a natural setting. A real background helps recipients get to know you and can spark a connection. Someone might notice a sports team poster or a favorite book and feel an instant connection.
  • Prefer a virtual background? OneDay doesn’t offer virtual backgrounds. Record your video with a virtual background on another platform, such as Zoom, then upload it into your OneDay account.

Step 3: Use good lighting

  • Record in a well-lit area so your recipient can clearly see your face.
  • Natural light works great. For an extra boost, try a ring light for your computer or phone.

Good lighting makes your video look warm and welcoming.

Step 4: Get the camera angle right

  • Make it look like a normal conversation. Place your camera at eye level. Avoid angles that point way up or way down, which is especially easy to do on your phone.
  • Make eye contact with the camera. Look into the lens, not at yourself on the screen.
  • Smooth things out. OneDay doesn’t have full filters, but you can tap the magic wand icon in the mobile app to smooth out your appearance for a little confidence boost.

Tips from OneDay customers

We asked OneDay customers what helped them feel more confident on camera:

  • It gets easier with practice. One customer felt anxious and awkward when she started recording, but she got over it by recording and watching her videos again and again.
  • Minimize distractions. Record somewhere with as little noise and as few distractions as possible.
  • Use a tripod. A simple tripod for your phone keeps your video steady, helps you stay focused and makes your videos look cleaner.
  • Use talking points, not a script. Reading word for word can make your delivery sound robotic. Instead, have an outline of what you want to say so your video stays concise. Some users write their talking points on a sticky note next to the camera.
  • Let go of the little things. Small details you notice about yourself usually go unnoticed by others. At the end of the day, you’re not the one watching the video. Your recipient is.
  • Have a “one and done” mindset. One customer treats her videos like an in-person conversation: “If you fumble over your words when talking to someone in person, you don’t get a chance to go back and redo it.” Talk naturally, as if the person were right in front of you, and don’t try to make it perfect.

Not feeling it today? Use an evergreen video

Some days you won’t feel camera-ready. You might be having a bad hair day, feeling under the weather, or just not feeling confident. That’s where evergreen videos come in.

An evergreen video is one you:

  • Record once and use regularly
  • Keep free of personal details, such as names
  • Use for a general message that works for many people

Keep your evergreen videos ready to go. When you need to send a video but don’t want to record, duplicate one and send it in seconds.

Review your evergreen videos from time to time to make sure the information is still relevant and fresh for your audience.
